Hair Loss Q & A
What causes thinning hair or hair loss?
There are many different possible causes of thinning hair or hair loss, including:
- Hormone changes
- Family history of hair loss
- Medical conditions like anemia
- Some types of prescription medication
- Nutritional deficiency
- High-stress levels
No matter what the cause of your hair loss is, and even if the cause isn't clear, there's something Dr. Marissa Santos can do to help. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is one of the most effective hair loss treatments available today.
What is PRP therapy?
PRP is a powerful healing therapy that uses the growth platelets within your own blood to help you regrow hair in areas where it's thinning or missing. There are several steps in the PRP hair loss treatment.
Blood draw
First, Dr. Santos does a quick blood draw. This isn't painful and takes only a minute.
Centrifuge machine
Next, Dr. Santos puts your blood in a sterile centrifuge machine. For the next 10 minutes, the machine spins your blood at a super-high speed to extract the PRP.
Treatment
Dr. Santos draws the platelets into an ultra-fine syringe, and then carefully injects it into the areas where you have thinning or missing hair. Alternatively, Dr. Santos may deliver the PRP to your scalp via microneedling.
Dr. Santos will use a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure, if necessary.
How many PRP treatments do I need for hair loss?
It depends on your specific situation. Most patients get optimal benefit from a series of treatments, usually at least three. Each treatment happens at least a month apart to allow enough time for you to see the new hair growth. Dr. Santos usually recommends that patients have maintenance treatments two to three times a year to keep your new hair growth strong and healthy.
What is the downtime after PRP for hair loss?
That's one of the biggest benefits of PRP for hair loss: There's no downtime at all. You can schedule your visits during your lunch break or any other convenient time for you and then get right back to your regular routine immediately afterward.
